Muriel Tyan
DESS Clin Psych

Hello there! I’m a clinical psychologist specialising in children, adolescents and families, with over twenty years of experience supporting clients from diverse cultural, linguistic and international backgrounds.

My work is especially informed by the realities of international and expatriate family life. Having lived in several countries as a mother in an expatriate family while raising my daughter as a third-culture kid, I understand first-hand the emotional complexity, richness and challenges of relocation, cultural adjustment and identity formation. I bring this perspective into my work with children, parents and families navigating life between cultures.

I initially trained at Saint Joseph University and later in France, completing studies in Clinical and Pathological Psychology at René Descartes University Paris V, la Sorbonne. Since 2000, I have worked in private practice in several countries, providing therapy, family support and psychological assessments

Some of the problems I work with include:

  • Emotional regulation difficulties

  • Anxiety and worry

  • School difficulties

  • Neuropsychological assessment

  • Third-culture kid challenges

  • Expatriate family adjustment

  • Stress and burnout

  • Trauma and post-traumatic stress

  • Family conflict

  • Behavioural difficulties

  • Self-esteem issues

  • Divorce and separation

  • Social and friendship difficulties

My therapeutic approach is integrative, drawing on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, solution-focused therapy, psychodynamic approaches and trauma-informed care.

I also conduct psychological and neuropsychological assessments for children, adolescents and adults, including evaluations for ADHD, autism, learning disorders, dyslexia, cognitive difficulties and emotional or behavioural concerns. My assessments and reports are based on gold-standard psychometric measures accepted internationally, and contain clear recommendations for families, schools and other professionals.

Alongside my clinical practice, I have extensive experience in humanitarian and charitable settings. I have worked with NGOs and international organisations including the United Nations ESCWA, Handicap International and the Headington Institute, supporting families, humanitarian workers and displaced communities affected by trauma, stress and major life transitions.

As a therapist, I aim to provide a warm, thoughtful and collaborative space where children and families feel genuinely understood. I believe that every child’s difficulties need to be understood within the wider context of family, culture, development and life experience. My goal is to help children, adolescents and parents make sense of what is happening, identify their strengths and move towards greater confidence, stability and wellbeing.

And if you have any questions at all, I'd love to hear from you at muriel@parispsychologycentre.com
